Chaos - Fleas and Rats

Last week we started a new focus on a topic which is "The Black Death", we had learnt how this disease spread around the globe and what caused it to become one of the most dangerous disease on Earth. The Black Death came to Europe in 1347 and killed millions, in medieval times places like the houses and towns were not so clean and had poor hygiene which made it easier for the Black Death to spread. It first started in Asia and spread among soldiers, it then travelled across over-seas and popular trading places which then the traders caught the disease making it a whole lot easier for it to spread around the globe. Now how this started was it began from Fleas and Rats, rats were mostly common in middle ages, due to the poor hygiene the rats were everywhere (houses, trading ships, churches, farms, castles & etc). We assume that when fleas bite the rodents and since rodents are in common places like houses it then transfers to humans and much quicker for it to spread.

Dilution - Science

Today in science we did an experiment on the topic Dilution, we had to first learn what dilution is another basic information about it. When doing the experiment we needed to know what was happening, a few things we picked up from previous lessons of science helped because we are able to describe what is happening. This covered what Solute, Solvent & Solution meant, including Dilution

Dilute : Making the solvent less concentrated(Weaker)
Solute : The substance being dissolved
Solvent : The liquid that does the dissolving
Solution : The mixture that forms as a result of combining together 
Concentration : A measure of how much solute has been dissolved into the solvent.

Aim : TO MAKE A DILUTION SERIES TO INVESTIGATE CONCENTRATION

Hypothesis: I think that every time we transfer the concentrated liquid to a clear water it will be diluted meaning less concentrated and transferring that to another clear water will make it even more diluted as the one before.

Equipment :

- Potassium Permanganate
- Test Tubes (x6)
- Test Tube Rack
- Measuring Cylinder
- Pipette 

Method:

  • Place the six test tubes in a test tube rack. Label the rack with numbers 1 - 6.
  • Using the measuring cylinder, fill test tube 1 with 10 mL of water. Fill the remaining test tubes with 5 mL of water.
  • Using your tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to test tube 1.
  • Gently shake the test tube until the crystal has dissolved.
  • Using the transfer pipette, carefully remove exactly 5 mL from test tube 1 and pour it into test tube 2.
  • Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to ensure that no purple solution remains.
  • Gently shake test tube 2 and repeat the transfer process, transferring exactly 5 mL of solution from test tube 2 to test tube 3.
  • Rinse the pipette again and repeat the transfer process for test tubes 4, 5 and 6.

Review:
Once the results came in we have already noticed that the test tube 1 has a visible colour meaning it isn't diluted yet also meaning that it is highly concentrated with the potassium permanganate particles in the liquid. As we transferred the solution from one test tube to another it became less concentrated, this means that there are less particles also can be told by its colour changing. In my opinion as I said before making the solution transfer to a clear water made the potassium permanganate less concentrated since there was more liquid. It is now very clear that the first test tube is the least diluted meaning it has high concentration and the least concentrated will be the last one which barely has any colour or potassium permanganate in it.

Budgeting Crossword - Business Studies

Last week for Business Studies, we've been learning about Budgeting and what it means. After learning a few basics about budgeting, we had to complete a job which covered words like Budget, Surplus, Deficit, Spend, Savings, Wants, Needs, Income, Finance, Price, Fees and Necessity.

There were two tasks to choose from, create a budgeting crossword and make a Budgeting Language dictionary. I chose to create a budgeting crossword where the evidence is above the definitions & explanation of the budgeting words.

Reflection:

In my opinion, I did a decent job in making the crossword, the crossword can teach people new words and new facts and information about budgeting and the definition of the words themselves. While making this crossword I learnt a few new words myself and a definition of them and I get a clear idea on what the word actually define and the process of budgeting.

Mixing & Dissolving - Hurumanu 3

Welcome back to another post, today we started on a new topic for Science, Hurumanu 3. We are now focusing on Mixing and Separating, instead of learning about the Separating bit we are learning Mixing and Dissolving for this week. We did learning behind this topic and afterwards did an experiment where we looked at sugar dissolving at opposed temperatures.

So we first learnt about what mixing, dissolving and soluble are and what they mean.

  1. What is Mixing/Mixture? - A substance made by combining two other or more substances together.
Examples of a Mixture:
  • Water
  • Coke
  • Sand
  • Cake
  • Salad
What is Dissolving? - Dissolving is when a substance becomes part of a liquid, also you can speed up the process of dissolving by stirring it or change the temperature.

Can Everything Dissolve? - No, Soluble meaning a substance that can dissolve in water and Insoluble meaning a substance which can not dissolve in water.

Examples of Soluble:
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Food colouring/Dye
  • Vinegar
  • Coffee
Examples of Insoluble:
  • Oil
  • Rock
  • Plastic
  • Glass
  • Wood
Now to the part where we did the experiment, we had to examine how fast can sugar dissolve and either different temperatures and how fast it dissolves either we mix the substances together or not. So this counts up to 4 experiments we had to analyse. It wasn't that hard to examine it because we had time everything and it was a short and easy experiment. 

Hypothesis: I think that the sugar will dissolve faster in hot water + stirring because the water temperature is so hot it has a lot of energy in it.

So the first step we took to start the experiments were the requirements of certain equipment, we used 1 large beaker and 1 small beaker. We then put some sugar into the small beaker and put 50ml of water into the large beaker, like I said before we had 4 experiments to analyse, we were also given a metal spatula and took a small amount of sugar in each of those 4 experiments. Just to clear this out when I said 4 experiments I meant that we had to do this 4 times and the sugar was needed in all those 4 tasks. In closing we had to time of how long it will take for the sugar to dissolve, all of the data was then written on the board.

These were the 4 task we did:
1. 50ml cold water + 1 Spatula Sugar = mixed/stirred
2. 50ml hot water + 1 Spatula Sugar = mixed/stirred
3. 50ml hot water + 1 Spatula Sugar = un-mixed/not stirred
4. 50ml cold water + 1 Spatula Sugar = un-mixed/not stirred

After bringing in the results and finishing all the 4 tasks, we had to add all of our time together with the rest of the classes time and then divide that number with how many times people wrote their results on the board to make the standard time.

Here are the final Results:
1. cold water + sugar / stirred = Total: 490 secs - Standard: 70 secs
2. hot water + sugar / stirred = Total: 213 secs - Standard: 27 secs
3. hot water + sugar / not stirred = Total: 590 secs - Standard: 78 secs
4. cold water + sugar / not stirred = Total: 622 secs - Standard: 124.4 secs

Conclusion:
In conclusion the hot water + stirred with sugar is the fastest to dissolve, just like I said before as my hypothesis the hot temperature of the water has more energy in it compared to the cold water which has less energy to give out.

The Marketing Mix - Promotions

So this is the last post on The Marketing Mix, this blog post will be about Promotions and getting our store more known. Promotions is the process of communicating with the target market and persuading them to buy what you are selling. This includes:

  • TV adverts
  • use of billboards
  • social media activity
  • influencers
  • online video and banner adverts
  • email advertisements
  • sponsorship deals
  • discounts and special offers
  • branding


Our precise targets are students, staff members or even other adults at Hornby High School community who basically like eating a lot of different food and like drinking a lot as well, our main strategy was to get our store more known by advertising it on TV or put posters around the area so that when people walk past they would notice it and hopefully be interested in the edible products we are making. We made so the price for our products are decent and reasonable, if that it can also make customers happy about the price and come and buy some products from us.

Our possible strategy to sell our product will be to set our store up near the Learning Commons since a lot of people walk past the shop and might be able to notice it so the chances are high that people will buy our products. This will be great and a good way to earn profit by selling all our products, due to where we will be putting up our stand there will be a lot of people so the chances will be great to make a big profit.
