Testing for Simple Sugars (Benedict's Test)

Today at science we have been testing for simple sugar ( benedicts Test). We worked as pairs and first, we took out a bunsen burner and set it up on fire, after that we took photos.

Next, we took out a test tube and added sugar. we added benedict solution, after that, we swirled the mixture in the test tube and over the flame, blue flame. I gave it to my pair and he dropped it on the floor, it was disappointing what happened
Hope you like it and have a great day :)

Aim
I want to find out how to test for simple sugars.

Simple sugars are carbohydrates that are quickly absorbed by the body to produce energy. They are also classified as “simple” because they contain only one or two units of sugar or saccharides. Also referred to as simple carbohydrates, these sugars are found naturally in a variety of foods that we consume daily.

Equipment
  • Safety glasses
  • Bunsen burner
  • Test tubes
  • Test tube tongs
  • Benedict's Solution
  • Food sample
Method

  1. Place about 2mL of the food sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of Benedict's solution and 5ml of water
  2. Gently heat the test tube over a blue flame.  DO NOT BOIL!

Results

A positive test for simple sugar results in Benedict's Solution changing from a blue colour to a yellow colour to an orange/red colour.

Conclusion

The chemical’s, sugar and benedict’s solution turned from blue colour to light orange colour as we mixed it over the blue flame.

Extra for experts

Two different types of sugar exist: simple and complex. Complex sugar takes longer for your body to break down and is healthier for your body. This type is found in natural carbohydrates such as whole grains and fruit. On the other hand, simple sugar is broken down by your body quickly and causes energy ups and downs. This type of sugar includes refined and processed sugar found in table sugar and added to many sweets. Consuming an excess of simple sugar comes with numerous health problems

  • Cereal and flavoured drinks have simple sugar to get you hyped.
  • At what times of the day may you need simple sugars? Fitness, Midday
  • Do you think that it would be wise to eat simple sugars before bed? No Why/why not? Because it will keep you hyped at night.

  1. You have written a great explanation about what you did for this experiment Ranit. Your questions are answered well showing that you understand simple sugars. It is ok that you dropped a test tube! It takes a while to get used to holding these in the tongs. Next time you could include some photos in your blog.

    1. Thanks for the comment, taking a photo was the problem because we or one of my teammates dropped it and we ran out of iPad's so we did not get a chance to take a photo. But thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.

  2. Yo yo yo! what's up Ranit? Nice blogpost by the way, I'm just wondering who your buddy was in this experiment, next time you should include that on your blogpost. Did you have fun doing this experiment?
